Introduction
From Feldspars to Silica, Red Iron or Copper, glazes are composed of Earth’s rocks and minerals, pulverized then suspended in water. Fired to the correct temperature these glaze formulas bond to create a strong surface, securely adhered to the clay, functional when cooled. The glazes at Shelburne Craft School, each with their own strengths, are a collection with endless possibilities. With this workshop we hope to simplify and direct one’s own exploration, add too it and reflect on the origins of glaze materials. Our goal is to build your glaze repertoire, reduce anxiety around the process and enjoy the magic behind the chemistry.
