Introduction
Raku was first created by the Raku family in 16th century Kyoto.
This workshop will allow you to glaze pieces that you have made at Shelburne Craft School, or glaze and fire pre-made pieces. Raku is one of the most exciting and dazzling processes that we engage in at the craft school.
We glaze bisque pieces and then fire them until red hot—remove them with tongs and put them in sawdust where they often catch fire (or smoke them). Finally we cool them in water where they hiss and bubble.
Please wear clothing that will not melt/easily catch on fire and bring a mask if you are sensitive to smoke.
