Introduction
Tapestry weaving dates back thousands of years and is a woven art form that conjures many images in peoples’ minds. It is a medium that allows the weaver to create shape, design, texture and symbol using yarn. In this workshop, students will learn fundamental skills required for taking their tapestry weaving ideas to the next level.
This form of weaving can be done on simple frame looms as well as more complex tapestry looms and floor looms. We will use a frame loom that students will learn to warp themselves. Also covered are: weaving vocabulary, tapestry yarns and certain tapestry tools. Students will create a sampler that will include most if not all of the following elements: horizontal and vertical lines, spots, and shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles and curves. Twining, soumak, outlining, and some finishing techniques will also be covered.
Come spend a weekend with us and learn an art form that you can carry with you and develop in the years to come!
Materials
Included
We will be using a 25" x 19" table top frame loom that can also rest on your lap. If you have your own frame loom you'd like to use, feel free to bring it to class. For the project we will do, looms need to be warped at 8 ends per inch. If your loom measures 4 warps per inch, we can double that to 8 and you'll be able to weave the same sampler as those using the looms provided by the school. Techniques for doing that will be taught as part of the class.
Yarn: we will primarily use Harrisville Highland Wool Yarn. If you have yarn of a similar weight and would prefer to use that instead, or in addition to what we have available, you are welcome to bring it. For the warp, we will use seine twine.
