Musical expression is essential to nurturing an artistic spirit. It is a vehicle for connecting to friends, family and community. In this course, students are encouraged to develop their own musical voice through the art of song writing. Designed for musicians who can play and sing but who are ready to learn the next steps in writing their own songs. Using traditional song structure as a comfortable base for exploration, the craft of song writing seeks to foster confidence and empower participants with the tools to make a good song. The course will cover how to care for one's instrument, how to investigate common used guitar chords in American Folk Music, how to develop inventive variations in style and expression, discuss the history of traditional American music, explore finger picking through hands on instruction as well as learning traditional chord progressions, and song structures. This course includes an optional Open Studio time on Sundays from 10:00 Am - 12:00 PM to practice solo or with a group.
