Introduction
Our introductory course will help you learn how to spin at your own pace, whether on a spinning wheel, a drop spindle or both. You'll soon have a new vocabulary and know your footman from your flyer as we explore a variety of topics, from selecting and understanding fleece characteristics, fiber preparation, the differences between worsted and woolen yarns and how they are spun, plying tips and finishing techniques. The emphasis in this class will be on learning to spin animal fibers.
At least 4 spinning wheels will be available for students to use and a number of drop spindles as well. You are encouraged to bring your own wheel or drop spindle if you have one.
Enjoy the pleasure of blending colors and mixed fibers using carders, or a blending board. Although the initial focus in this class will be on learning to control your spin to create an even smooth two ply yarn, you will be welcome to explore creating unique art yarns using a variety of techniques. Most people discover a meditative quality that spinning yarn instills. It asks us to “be here now” for every moment of the process, a calming focus and a satisfying way to supply yourself with beautiful yarn for knitting, crochet or weaving.
With a small class size and plenty of one-on-one attention from Lausanne, this is an opportunity to learn a timeless skill while making some new friends who appreciate the pleasure of transforming fiber into useful yarn. If you are a spinner already but are not satisfied with the quality of your spinning, this is an excellent opportunity to fine-tune your spin!
